Description

The Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) is offering internship opportunities in the South African National Research Network (SANREN) programme, which is part of the National Integrated Cyberinfrastructure System (NICIS). These internships are hosted within the Next Generation Enterprises and Institutions cluster. The purpose of the internship is to provide graduates with practical work experience through research and development of competitive technologies and innovative products. Interns will work under the guidance of researchers and engineers in cross-functional teams. These positions are based in Pretoria.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and maintain in-depth knowledge of cybersecurity technologies, threats, vulnerabilities, and controls, including countermeasures, while advising on cybersecurity best practices
  • Support the software development initiatives of the Cyber Security Incident Response Team (CSIRT) group
  • Assist with system administration, such as installation, configuration, and maintenance of CSIRT security systems and cyberinfrastructure
  • Monitor security risks and investigate suspicious ICT security events
  • Provide cybersecurity incident response support to Senior CSIRT members when needed
  • Contribute to the design of best practices, recommendations, playbooks, and awareness training for SANREN beneficiaries
  • Attend technical and on-the-job training as required
  • Participate in relevant conferences, symposiums, and training events to contribute to the cybersecurity body of knowledge
  • Provide technical support to SANREN staff

Qualifications

  • A Bachelor's degree in computer/electronic engineering, computer science, information technology, or related fields
  • Certification in CompTIA Network+ or CompTIA Security+ will be advantageous
  • Background in cybersecurity, information security, software development, and/or networking
  • Practical knowledge of programming languages such as Python, scripting, and the Linux operating system
  • Knowledge and experience in software development and system administration
  • Good understanding of cybersecurity concepts and protocols
  • Strong communication skills (both verbal and written) and ability to interact efficiently with diverse teams
  • Good time management, problem-solving, and critical thinking skills, with the discipline to work independently
