The South African Reserve Bank (SARB) is inviting aspiring economists entering their first year of undergraduate studies in the 2026 academic year to apply for its external bursaries programme. The SARB serves the economic well-being of all South Africans by maintaining price and financial stability, regulating the South African financial sector, designing and distributing banknotes and coins, managing interest rates, setting the cash reserve requirement for banks, and ensuring the stability of both the banking sector and the wider financial system. The bursary scheme aims to address the severe shortage of skills in South Africa and provides scholarships and bursaries to students from disadvantaged backgrounds. The SARB's Economic Research Department and the SARB Academy invite prospective undergraduate degree students to apply for competitive bursaries in economics, economics and econometrics, economics and mathematical statistics, and economic science. The closing date for applications is Tuesday, 30 September 2025, and applicants must submit examination results, proof of acceptance at a recognized institution, and supporting documents.
